Enjoying doing yoga poses with my daughter

Post my marriage, getting up early in the morning had been tough—my wife, unlike my parents, did not like going to bed early. The habit rubbed off on me too, and it was augmented by the fact that I had to work on my freelance writing work for late hours given that majority of the clients were from Western countries and the time zone was completely different. Submitting to a morning routine of jogging, walk, or even some yoga poses on the mat was not possible. However, the scenario changed once my daughter started going to the school. The modern school curriculum in India has a good exposure to yoga for all the children, and they are given yoga sessions almost on a daily basis.

My daughter started coming to me with new yoga poses every day that she learned at school, and asked me to practice them with her—just like any child would ask its parents to play alongside. This practice kept on going and going and became a fun activity for both of us.

Whenever I would do Vajrasana and try to do the advanced version of touching my thighs and knees with my stomach, she would step on my back and start playing. Similarly, whenever I did Kapala-Bhati, she would touch my stomach to make me giggle. What I loved about these little sessions is that it gave us the perfect bonding time coupled with the physical care that was involved for both of us. I recommend that every parent should start doing yoga with the children—if your children don’t learn them at school, you can initiate them in easy routines or even ask the schools to start some sessions at the school itself with the help of a yoga instructor.
